Exploring the hardware and software of my bakery ordering device

Ordering device?

I’ve been enjoying bakery products practically all my life, but the problem arose when I realized I have an intolerance to wheat-based bakery items due to my blood type B. Discovering that each blood type has specific food intolerances led me to continue my exploration in the world of baked goods.

This is a follow-up to my first project, a case study for a bakery I named ‘Fresh2Bake’. The issue of bakery product intolerance and inadequate hygiene in packaging led me to create my second case study project, which I’ve called ‘Bake2AI’.

Bake2AI is a small and compact hardware device that includes a simple display through which you can scan purchased bakery products. Each bakery item is securely packaged and comes with its own QR code.

When you scan the code before eating, the device updates your list to show that the bakery product has been consumed or reduces the available stock count. This helps you easily keep track of what you’ve eaten and what’s left in stock.

This straightforward yet efficient and user-friendly device can significantly simplify the process of ordering bakery products. When you press the ‘Order’ button, it automatically arranges delivery to your pre-defined address within the Fresh2Bake application.

A Simple Device, Simple Ordering

Ordering with a Bake2AI device is a breeze, transforming it into a smart home essential in just a few simple steps. Picture this: You step into your kitchen, craving a fresh bakery delight.

With this Bake2AI device, all you do is scan the QR code on the packaging — it’s as simple as taking a photo with your smartphone. In an instant, the item is marked ‘consumed’ on your list. When it’s time to restock your favorite treats, just tap the ‘Order’ button, and your next batch is on its way to your door.

The problem

While creating this device, I noticed three issues: firstly, the absence of a USB-C charging port; secondly, the lack of a sound or alarm signal when the bakery stock is running low; and third, the absence of a power button.

Power

An awesome device, but missing one crucial element — the power to switch it on or off. The solution? I decided to add a tiny power button in the upper right-hand corner of the Bake2AI device. Problem solved, and innovation at its finest!

Charging

I wanted to create something truly adaptable, a device that’s not confined to the fridge but can be placed anywhere you need it. That’s why I believe including a USB-C charging port is essential.

It’s not just about its portability; it’s about simplicity. With this modern charging option, you can easily keep the device powered up, whether it’s on your fridge, your kitchen wall, or any other convenient spot.

It’s all about giving you flexibility and peace of mind — no need to worry about running out of power, so you can enjoy the convenience of Bake2AI anytime and anywhere.

Sound

A sound or alarm signal is crucial, especially considering the diverse range of people with disabilities. This feature ensures that anyone can place an order and stay informed about low bakery product stock levels.

I think that placing these small speakers on the sides of the device can ensure that the alarm is both audible and easy to locate. This design element enhances inclusivity, catering to a wide range of needs and preferences. Whether you rely on sound cues or visual indicators, you’re covered, ensuring that you never miss a beat when managing your bakery product stock.

Hardware

With these three concerns in focus, I kicked off the creative process of envisioning positive changes for the device.

By seamlessly integrating these features, the primary user experience remains undisturbed, allowing for effortless use of the device without causing distractions. After I sketched out my integrated solutions, the next exciting step was to bring them to life with a 3D mockup.

With its 7.8-inch frame (or 20x20 cm), the Bake2AI device ensures that accessibility knows no bounds.

Whether it’s in your kitchen, on your countertop, or even by your bedside, this device is designed to fit seamlessly into your life, bringing convenience to your fingertips.

Detachable Magnetic Mounting

Crafted with a versatile detachable mounting system, the Bake2AI device empowers users to effortlessly detach it from one surface and securely attach it to another. This magnetic mounting enhances its practicality, allowing users to enjoy its convenience wherever they go.

Say goodbye to limitations and hello to a world of delicious possibilities, all within arm’s reach!

Why this design?

Typically, displays and smart home hardware tend to blend into the same generic black-and-white mold. I, on the other hand, wanted to inject some personality into my Bake2AI hardware solution by introducing a distinctive character.

Meet ‘Sprinkle,’ a cute character from my first case study project — Fresh2Bake. By bringing Sprinkle to life and maintaining consistent fonts, colors, and an 8pt grid on the display, just like in my Fresh2Bake app, my goal was to craft an enchanting and unforgettable experience that truly stands out from the ordinary.

Software

Bake2AI boasts a software interface that mirrors the style and 8pt grid found in my Fresh2Bake app, ensuring a seamless and familiar experience. The simplicity of this interface is key, with clear and straightforward steps.

One of the most crucial aspects is user verification. To get started, users are prompted to enter their name, address, and phone number into the Fresh2Bake app. Bake2AI then securely retrieves these details to confirm the user’s identity and existing profile from the app.

Once users have input these essential details into the app, they are free to register the Bake2AI device. All it takes is connecting to one of their Wi-Fi networks and entering the phone number previously provided in the Fresh2Bake app. With a successful authorization, the home display springs to life, showcasing the same fresh, up-to-date data as in the Fresh2Bake app.

Bake2AI is a groundbreaking device that takes the hassle out of ordering bakery products. It simplifies the process by allowing users to scan bakery product packaging effortlessly. With its intuitive interface, consistent design, and practical features, Bake2AI transforms the ordering experience.
